A freeware arcade game for EPOC & Symbian OS

Smuggers is a full-featured freeware arcade game in a world of mazes, elephant monsters and spiders.

Smuggers dates back from 2001 and it is now in version 2.00. It is written in OPL language and runs on EPOC OS R3-5 (Psion Series 5, GeoFox One, Oregon Osaris, Psion Series 5mx, Ericsson MC218, Psion Revo/Revo+, Diamond Mako, Psion Series 7 and netBook) and Symbian OS v6-7 with Series 80 (Nokia Communicator 9210, 9210i, 9290, 9500, 9300 and 9300i).

Smuggers is a fast paced and addictive game. You are in a world of 50 challenging mazes, with 4 enemies, the Smuggers elephant mutants, and a strange spider.

Try to escape from the Smuggers elephant monsters walking and jumping in many different mazes. You can lose jumps while touching the Spider, but after eating almost all of the points of the maze, the Spider will start blinking. Then you will have 10 seconds to catch the Spider and pass to another level and maze. Are you skilful enough ? The full cast of Smuggers.

Some features of Smuggers :

sized to fit the screen of each different machine type, using graylevels or colours;

6 game difficulty levels with or without increasing speed;

50 mazes, in sequence or random order;

1 or 2 players mode;

user defined keys, even after starting the game;

intelligent reading of the keys;

high scores table for each difficulty level;

email high scores function (only on Nokia 9xxx Communicator);

sound (except on Osaris);

two options of animation quality (except on Nokia 9xxx Communicator).

Smuggers is here, there & everywhere : from past to the future

The RevoWorld site published in February 2002 a nice and long review, written by Peter Rand, about Smuggers v1.10;
The "PalmTop" british magazine issue 36 of February 2002 showed a mini review of Smuggers v1.10, written by Steve Litchfield;
The "What Laptop and Handhelp PC" british magazine published in the April 2002 issue a small review of Smuggers v1.10/1.20, by Sandra Vogel;
The "PDA Essentials" british magazine published in 2003 Q4 a review of Smuggers v1.30 and in 2004 Q1-Q2 a mini review of Smuggers v1.35 for Nokia 92xx Communicator, both written by Andy Nott.

There were/are other (small) reviews in many sites and in many languages, just search for "Smuggers" on Google to check it ;-)

I have lost the total numbers, but there were at least 20,000 downloads until the end of 2004, and a not so large number of registered users from all continents. Considering that Smuggers v1.00 was released only in January 2002, i.e., 4 years after the launch of Psion Series 5 and 3 years after Psion Series 5MX & Revo, these download statistics seem good for me. The Nokia 92xx version of Smuggers was also released somewhat late, 1.5 years after the Nokia 9210 (market) launch. Now that the Nokia 9500/9300(i) version of Smuggers is released, it is 2 years after the Nokia 9500 launch.

There were/are some reasons for these delays : the Psion/Nokia machines were expensive for me when I was student (I bought in 2000 a Psion Siena 1MB instead of a Psion EPOC machine), in Brazil sometimes there is a 6-12 month delay for market launch, delays in the release of OPL for Nokia 9xxx, I have not spare time to program in OPL as a hobby, etc. The Smuggers registrations have helped to buy newer machines and develop Smuggers for new devices, so I thank all registered users of Smuggers.

But now Smuggers v2.00 is freeware, available for Nokia 9500/9300(i), I have a Psion Revo+ and a Nokia 9500 to develop Smuggers, so I hope the current and future versions can be played and enjoyed a lot by the Psion and Symbian Series 80 users.

Adolfo Bittencourt's Art Gallery

Adolfo Bittencout is a Brazilian artist and he made the art drawings of Smuggers. He continues to remember me to make a 3D version of Smuggers (but it is almost impossible to do it with OPL...) as he wants to create 3D models of the Smuggers cast :-)

Here is a large sample of his art drawings for Smuggers, all made in the beginning of 2002. I have used some of them in t-shirts ! The Smuggers elephants are mutants indeed !
